Our Integrated Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine Fellowship trains fellows to become leaders in the care of older adults and those with serious illness.

In this two-year program, fellows meet core competency requirements in Geriatrics and Hospice and Palliative Medicine in 16 months and are provided with up to 8 months of scholarly time including leadership activities and professional development. Graduates of the integrated fellowship are board-eligible in both Geriatric Medicine and Hospice and Palliative Medicine. 

Clinical Training

Clinical training draws from our two longstanding fellowships in Geriatrics and Hospice and Palliative Medicine. Fellows gain a diverse range of experiences designed to immerse them in the core principles and practices of geriatrics and palliative care while working alongside interprofessional teams across multiple settings and evidence-based models of care.

Rotations include

  • Inpatient and outpatient geriatric medicine and palliative care across our medical facilities (Harborview Medical Center, VA Puget Sound Health Care System, and University of Washington Medical Center)
  • Post-acute care/Long-term care
  • Home-based primary care
  • Home-based palliative care
  • Community-based experiences (e.g., Program of All-Inclusive Care of the Elderly, Area Agency on Aging)
  • Pain management (acute, chronic, interventional)
  • Hospice care

Continuity (Longitudinal) Rotations

  • Senior Care Clinic (Geriatric Year)
  • Palliative Care Outpatient Clinic (Palliative Year)
  • Home-based Primary Care (Years 1 and 2)
  • Post-acute Care/Long-term Care (Years 1 and 2)

Scholarly Activity

The integrated fellowship provides up to eight months of dedicated scholarly time, allowing fellows to pursue interests in research, education, and/or quality improvement while focusing on professional development.

Fellows work closely with dedicated mentor(s) on

  • Scholarly projects
  • Leadership development
  • Career advancement

Leadership Training

Fellows receive comprehensive leadership training through multiple avenues, including

  • A national leadership curriculum
  • VitalTalk® training (led by UW faculty)
  • A professional development series
  • Quality improvement leadership activities
  • Educational leadership opportunities and experiences
