In this two-year program, fellows meet core competency requirements in Geriatrics and Hospice and Palliative Medicine in 16 months and are provided with up to 8 months of scholarly time including leadership activities and professional development. Graduates of the integrated fellowship are board-eligible in both Geriatric Medicine and Hospice and Palliative Medicine.
Clinical Training
Clinical training draws from our two longstanding fellowships in Palliative Medicine and Geriatrics and includes a diverse range of experiences to fully immerse in core principles and practice of geriatrics and palliative care working alongside interprofessional teams across many settings and evidence-based models of care. Fellows will participate in rotations in inpatient and outpatient geriatric medicine, inpatient and outpatient palliative care in each of our medical facilities (Harborview Medical Center, VA Puget Sound, University of Washington Medical Center), long-term care, nursing home care, home visits, community-based experiences (e.g. Program for All Inclusive Care of the Elderly, Area Agency on Aging), home based palliative care, interventional pain management, hospice, and much more. Experiences are tailored to the interest and learning needs of the fellow. Our fellowship ensures that fellows gain experience providing culturally competent care and learning best practices for caring for diverse older adults and those with serious illness. Scholarly Activity
The integrated fellowship includes up to 8 months of scholarly time for fellows to pursue interests in research, education and/or quality improvement as they focus on their professional development. Fellows will work alongside dedicated mentor(s) on their scholarly projects and development of leadership skills. We have a robust group of mentors across geriatrics, palliative medicine, and across disciplines to support scholarly activities that match the interests of fellows.
Leadership Training
Fellows receive leadership training through multiple venues including a national leadership curriculum, Vital Talk training (which is led by UW faculty), a professional development series, quality improvement leadership activities, and educational leadership opportunities and experiences.
