Research Interests
The research focus of the Yu laboratory is the study of molecular mechanisms by which genetic and epigenetic variations can lead to aging-associated neurodegeneration. The research goal is to apply such knowledge to develop personalized treatment options. The Yu laboratory has a longstanding track record in the genetic study of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and related dementias. Their prior work has made key contributions to the identification of AD susceptibility genes, including APOE, PSEN1, and PSEN2. Their recent work has identified a novel epigenetic alteration of the APOE in AD and has demonstrated that this alteration is specific to glial cells in the AD brain. Currently, they are conducting neuroepigenetic studies to decipher APOE gene’s epigenetic role in AD. Understanding the molecular mechanisms/pathways that drive epigenetic regulation of the APOE could shed light on potential precision medicine for AD and other aging-associated neurodegenerative disorders.
