Dr. Darrell Owens, clinical assistant professor, is quoted in “Sent home to die” in ProPublica.
“You have to be very aggressive in terms of getting ahead of symptoms, because with COVID, once that shortness of breath starts, it’s very hard to control,” said Dr. Darrell Owens, a doctor of nursing practice who runs palliative and supportive care at the University of Washington Medical Center-Northwest in Seattle. He said he would be “very worried about trying to manage that” in home hospice, and that dying patients at his hospital were provided palliative support through an inpatient program. “We sent nobody — zero — home on hospice to die of COVID.”
