Research Interests

Dr. Reed’s longstanding interest is in evaluating the effects of the extracellular matrix (ECM) on tissue repair and the microvasculature in aging, in vitro and in vivo. She has a specific interest in hyaluronan (HA), a highly expressed linear disaccharide polymer that changes in abundance and size with aging and injury. Dr. Reed’s research focuses on regulation of HA and the ECM in the microvasculature of aging brains and in brains with neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s.

Dr. Reed is also engaged in multiple projects related to improving the detection of frailty and other pathways to optimize the care of older trauma patients. Dr. Reed was in the second cohort of Beeson Scholars in Aging Research and has had continuous funding from the NIH for over 20 years. She is also Director of the UW MSTAR (Medical Student Training in Aging Research) Program.
